Shake Shack Nutrition & Allergens (2026): Calories & Diet Guide

(Last Updated : October 2026)
If you’re trying to work out what’s in your Shake Shack order, this page has the numbers. You’ll find the calories, protein, carbs, fat and sodium for every burger, chicken sandwich, hot dog, side, shake and drink, a free calculator that adds up your whole order, and a plain-English allergen chart. Further down there are ordering tips for gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, vegan, low-carb and high-protein diets. As a quick reference, a single ShackBurger is 500 calories, regular fries are 470 and a classic shake runs 680 to 850.

How to Estimate an Order by Hand ?

You don’t need a tool to get a close number. Shake Shack builds its burgers from the same parts, so you can add them up yourself.

Step 1. Start with the item from the nutrition tables further down. If your exact order is listed, use that number. Sides, shakes and drinks should be taken as listed, because their totals don’t come from adding parts.

Step 2. For burgers, add or subtract components using these values from the sheet:

Step 3. Add your side and drink from the tables below.

Worked examples :

  • Hamburger to Bacon Cheeseburger: 370 + cheese 70 + bacon 90 = 530. The sheet lists the single Bacon Cheeseburger at 500, so expect about 30 calories of drift.
  • Gluten-free bun swap: single ShackBurger 500 − potato bun 180 + gluten-free bun 160 = 480, which matches the sheet.
  • Bunless: 500 − 180 + 5 = 325. The sheet says 330, so expect a few calories of drift.
  • No cheese, no sauce: ShackBurger 500 − cheese 70 − ShackSauce 60 = 370 calories and 850 mg sodium. That’s exactly the single Hamburger, which is a handy check that the method works.

A full meal: single ShackBurger, regular fries and a small lemonade.

That sits inside Shake Shack’s own combo range of 970 to 1,240 calories for a single ShackBurger meal (a Big Shack meal is 1,380 to 1,640). The sodium alone is about 87% of the 2,300 mg daily value.
Treat hand-built totals as close, not exact. Rounding and portion differences can move a result by 5 to 10 calories. For allergies or strict medical limits, use the official sheet.

Shake Shack Nutrition PDF

Shake Shack publishes a Nutrition & Allergen Information PDF for its U.S. menu, and its app shows the same details when you order. It’s the most reliable source for any Shake Shack number, which is why this page is built on it.

What’s Inside the PDF ?

The sheet is organized by menu category: burgers, chicken, breakfast, flat-top dogs, fries and sides, sauces, shakes, floats, cups and sundaes, drinks, combo meals, limited-time offerings, lifestyle offerings (the lettuce wrap and gluten-free bun versions), and beer, wine and cocktails. A few regional items, such as the NYC Late Night fries, only appear there.

How to Read the Columns ?

Each row gives calories, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrates, fiber, sugars and protein. The allergens for each item are printed in green next to its name.

Three details are easy to miss:

  • An asterisk means the item isn’t sold at every Shack.
  • The sugar column is total sugars, which includes natural sugar from milk. It isn’t the same as added sugar.
  • Combo meal rows show a range, because the total depends on which side and drink you choose.

Why the Same Burger Shows Different Calories Online ?

If you’ve compared tables on different sites, you’ve probably seen numbers that don’t match. There are three usual reasons.
The first is old data. Many tables still show the Wake Up Shack at 630 calories. The January 2026 sheet lists it at 670. Recipes change, and older figures linger online.
The second is size confusion. Some price lists show 760 calories next to “ShackBurger,” but that’s the double. The single is 500.
The third is rounding. Figures written as “about 450” or “~350” are estimates, not sheet values. If you’re counting carefully, use a source that shows exact numbers and a date.

What the PDF Doesn’t Tell You ?

The sheet describes ingredients and averages. It doesn’t say how a kitchen handles shared fryers, grills or toppings, and portions at your Shack can differ slightly from the average. That matters most for allergies, so it’s covered in the allergen sections below.

The lettuce wrap saves about 170 calories and nearly all the carbs. It also costs a few grams of protein, since the bun has some: a single ShackBurger drops from 29 g to 23 g. The Veggie Shack and Chicken Shack wraps aren’t low-carb, because the patty and breading carry the carbs.

Chicken :

The Chicken Shack has 550 calories and 33 g of protein, which is 4 g more protein than a single ShackBurger for 50 more calories. The breading and herb mayo account for most of the fat.

Beer, Wine and Cocktails :

Where alcohol is served, the sheet lists it too. A 12 oz Brooklyn ShackMeister Ale is 160 calories and a 6 oz pour of Shack White or Shack Red is 140 or 150. Cocktails run higher: a Patrón Shackarita is 260 and a Boozy Frozen Lemonade is 290. The boozy shakes are dessert territory, with the Boozy Espresso Shake at 780 and the Bourbon Peaches & Cream Shake at 880. Alcohol isn’t sold at every Shack, and the beer list is marked as containing wheat and gluten.

Sodium, Sugar and Carbs: What the Numbers Mean

Calories get the attention, but sodium is the number that surprises people. The FDA daily value is 2,300 mg.

ItemSodiumShare of daily value
‘Shroom Burger670 mgabout 29%
Single Hamburger850 mgabout 37%
Single ShackBurger1,250 mgabout 54%
Veggie Shack (single)1,630 mgabout 71%
Double ShackBurger2,280 mgabout 99%
Big Shack2,860 mgabout 124%

Two things stand out. A double ShackBurger uses up nearly the whole day’s sodium by itself. And the Veggie Shack has more sodium than a ShackBurger, so meatless doesn’t mean lighter on salt. The ‘Shroom Burger has the least of any sandwich here.
On sugar, the shake figures are total sugars, so they can’t be compared directly with the FDA’s 50 g daily value for added sugars. They do show how sweet a cup is: 69 to 86 g for the classics.
On carbs, the side usually matters more than the burger. A single ShackBurger has 26 g and regular fries have 63 g.

Shake Shack Allergen Chart

Shake Shack’s sheet lists the major allergens for each item: milk, egg, wheat, soy, sesame, peanut, tree nuts and fish. Most of them come from a few components, so it’s quicker to learn those first.

A few patterns help:

  • A plain hamburger has no egg or soy. Those arrive with the cheese and the ShackSauce.
  • The Chicken Shack’s egg appears to come from the herb mayo, not the breading. Chicken Bites list wheat only.
  • Taking away the bun removes sesame and, for the ShackBurger, wheat as well.
  • The ‘Shroom Burger lists no soy, even though most other burgers do.

Egg, Soy, Sesame, Peanut, Tree Nut and Fish :

  • Egg sits in the sauces (ShackSauce, Secret Sauce, honey mustard, breakfast sauce, herb mayo, ranch), in all custard and shakes, and in the egg breakfast items. A hamburger, cheeseburger, Grilled Cheese, hot dog, Chicken Bites and plain fries list no egg.
  • Soy comes mainly from American cheese, the veggie patty and Oreo pieces. One allergy-focused guide that follows Shake Shack closely also reports that the company discloses soy oil for frying its fries. Highly refined soybean oil is generally not treated as an allergen, but if you react to it, ask your Shack what’s in the fryer.
  • Sesame is in the potato bun and roll, which means nearly every bun-based sandwich and every hot dog. The gluten-free bun, lettuce wraps, Chicken Bites, fries and shakes list none.
  • Peanut appears on the sheet only for the Reese’s Peanut Butter Shake. Core burgers, fries and classic shakes list no peanut ingredient, but a list of ingredients isn’t a promise of a peanut-free kitchen.
  • Tree nuts aren’t an ingredient in the core menu. The sheet does warn that cross-contact with tree nuts may be possible in every shake because of limited-time flavors. One cocktail, the RBI Mai Tai, lists tree nut as an ingredient.
  • Fish isn’t on the core menu.

Cross-Contact and the Fryer :

The sheet lists ingredients. It doesn’t describe how the kitchen works, and that’s where most real-world problems start.

Fries are the clearest case. They list no allergens, yet diners with celiac disease regularly report that their Shack cooks fries in a fryer shared with breaded chicken and onion rings, which contain wheat and milk. Reports differ from location to location: some people describe a dedicated fryer, others describe a shared one, and one reviewer says the oil is filtered through equipment that also handles breaded items. That’s the reason to ask at your own Shack instead of relying on what someone else saw at theirs.

Other places cross-contact can happen:

  • Buns. An allergy guide reports that regular buns are toasted with butter, so ask for no butter if you’re ordering a gluten-free bun for a milk allergy.
  • The shake station. Mix-ins such as Oreo pieces, malt and seasonal toppings are handled at the same station as every shake, which is why the tree nut warning covers all of them.
  • Shared surfaces. Grills, prep areas and condiment stations are shared in an open kitchen.

How to Order With a Food Allergy :

  • 1. Say “allergy” instead of “I’d prefer.” It changes how the team handles the order.
  • 2. Order at the counter or kiosk when you can. Delivery apps make it hard to flag an allergy.
  • 3. Ask specific questions, such as “Are the fries cooked in the same oil as the chicken?”
  • 4. Ask for fresh gloves and clean utensils.
  • 5. If you can’t get a clear answer, skip that item.

Is Shake Shack Gluten-Free?

Shake Shack isn’t a gluten-free restaurant and doesn’t claim to be, but beef burgers are easy to order without wheat.

What works by ingredient:

  • Any beef burger on the gluten-free bun (160 calories) or in a lettuce wrap. The calories for each are in the bun, gluten-free bun and lettuce wrap table above. For burgers that aren’t listed there, expect the gluten-free bun to be about 20 calories lighter than the potato bun (160 against 180).
  • Hot dogs without the bun. The Hot Dog, Cheese Dog and Bacon Cheese Dog patties are beef, and the bun is what carries the wheat. Allergy guides report that Shacks will serve a dog in a lettuce wrap; confirm it at yours.
  • Regular fries and cheese fries, by ingredient only (see the fryer section above).
  • ShackSauce, BBQ sauce, lemonade, iced tea and sodas.
  • Vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, coffee and black & white shakes list milk and egg only.

What works by ingredient:

  • All potato buns and rolls.
  • The Chicken Shack and Chicken Bites, including the lettuce-wrap Chicken Shack, because the breading is the source.
  • The ‘Shroom Burger and both Veggie Shack sizes, even in a lettuce wrap.
  • Onion rings, crispy onions and the mac & cheese (panko).
  • Malt, Oreo crumbs and the Cookies & Cream Shake.
  • Croissants, the danish and monkey bread.
  • Beer.

For celiac disease:

A 2021 pilot study in Frontiers in Nutrition bought fries from ten restaurants that all confirmed their fryers also cooked wheat foods. Gluten turned up in some of the orders, with the amount depending on the test used. That’s a small study, not a verdict on Shake Shack, but it’s why many celiac guides advise skipping shared-fryer fries. Burgers on a gluten-free bun or in a lettuce wrap are the lower-risk choice. Ask whether the team will change gloves and prep separately.v

Dairy-Free Options

Dairy shows up in more places than most people expect. The potato bun has it, along with American cheese, cheese sauce, ranch, herb mayo, crispy onions, the ‘Shroom patty, the buttermilk chicken and every shake, float and custard.

That means there’s no dairy-free sandwich on the menu, but you can build one:

  • A hamburger on a gluten-free bun or in a lettuce wrap, no cheese. The patty and the usual toppings list no milk. This is a custom order, so confirm it with the team.
  • A hamburger with bacon the same way, or a hot dog in a lettuce wrap.
  • Regular fries and BBQ sauce. Fries list no milk, but skip the cheese sauce and ask that nobody sprinkles parmesan on them.
  • Lemonade, iced tea, sodas and water.

Egg is a separate allergen. ShackSauce contains egg, so ask for BBQ sauce, mustard or no sauce if you’re avoiding both.

  • Beer.

A note on dairy-free shakes. Shake Shack sold a non-dairy chocolate shake and custard in the U.S. for a while. According to Go Dairy Free’s July 2026 update, both have been discontinued. Some websites still list them, so don’t plan an order around them. As things stand there’s no dairy-free dessert on the sheet, and whipped cream always contains milk.

Vegetarian and Vegan Options

Vegetarian :

Shake Shack has real vegetarian choices, though none of them are light.

ItemCaloriesProteinSodium
Garden Dog (not at every Shack)1808 g1,060 mg
Grilled Cheese32014 g850 mg
‘Shroom Burger51018 g670 mg
Veggie Shack (single)63020 g1,630 mg

The ‘Shroom Burger is a crisp-fried portobello mushroom filled with cheese, and it’s the lowest-sodium sandwich on the menu. The Veggie Shack is a patty made with wheat and soy. Fries, cheese fries, onion rings, mac & cheese, egg breakfast sandwiches, hashbrowns and shakes are also meat-free. The sheet tracks allergens, not cooking methods, so ask about shared grills or fryers if strict vegetarianism matters to you.

Vegan :

Vegan is the hard one. No menu item is labeled vegan, every standard bun contains milk, and there’s currently no vegan shake. What’s left comes from custom orders:

  • Veggie Shack, modified: gluten-free bun or lettuce wrap, no cheese, no crispy onions, and a vegan sauce in place of ShackSauce. The patty lists wheat and soy but no milk or egg.
  • Garden Dog in a lettuce wrap, where available.
  • Plain hashbrowns. The extra hashbrowns list no allergens, though the version with sauce contains egg.
  • Regular fries, if you’re comfortable with the fryer.
  • Sauces: BBQ sauce, mustard and relish are the usual picks. Check the BBQ sauce for honey, since the sheet doesn’t say.
  • Drinks: lemonade, iced tea, sodas and water.

These vegan builds come from the sheet plus what allergy-focused guides report, not from a Shake Shack vegan list. Confirm with the team, especially for toppings and cooking surfaces.

Low-Carb and High-Protein Orders

Low-Carb :

A lettuce-wrapped beef burger is the low-carb order: a single ShackBurger wrap has 3 g of carbs, a single SmokeShack wrap has 5 g and a single Avocado Bacon wrap has 3 g (see the bun table above). Skip the fries, which have 63 g, and the shake, which has 69 to 86 g of sugar. Whether that fits a strict low-carb or keto plan depends on your own targets.

High-Protein :

For protein, plain beef does the work. Cheese and sauce add fat, not much protein, so a simple hamburger beats a ShackBurger on protein per calorie.

Lighter Orders

“Healthy” depends on what you’re tracking, so here are the levers by goal.

  • Lowest overall: Garden Dog (180), a single vanilla custard cup (280), Grilled Cheese (320), Egg White Light (320).
  • Lowest-calorie burger: the single Hamburger (370) or a ShackBurger lettuce wrap (330).
  • Easy swaps: single instead of double saves 190 to 260; a custard cup instead of a shake saves about 400; a small Fifty-Fifty instead of a small lemonade saves 80; skipping cheese saves 70.

The meal around the burger matters more than the burger. A single Hamburger with water and a double ShackBurger with cheese fries and a shake are two very different lunches.

FAQs

A single ShackBurger is 500 calories, a double is 760 and a triple is 1,020. In a lettuce wrap, the single drops to 330.

The Double Down Fries (1,920, select Shacks) and the Reese’s Peanut Butter Shake (1,900) are the heaviest items. Among regular burgers, the triple Avocado Bacon Burger leads at 1,180.

The Garden Dog at 180 calories, where it’s sold. At every Shack, the lightest sandwich is the single Hamburger at 370, or 330 for a ShackBurger in a lettuce wrap.

Yes. Cheese is 70 calories and ShackSauce is 60, so removing both takes a ShackBurger from 500 to about 370. The calculator section shows the math.

Not necessarily. Shake Shack’s UK site, for example, keeps its own allergen and nutrition pages. Menus, recipes and suppliers differ by country, so use the guide for the country you’re in.
